Cherry Knolls Park Improvement Project

South Suburban is updating Cherry Knolls Park. The proposed updates include upgrading the existing playground area and the restroom. The playground area will include a larger shade pavilion, new playground equipment, poured-in-place rubber safety surfacing, and supporting amenities like benches and trash receptacles. The restroom improvements will include a complete interior and exterior renovation. Additionally, the remaining crusher fines sections of Big Dry Creek Trail will be converted to concrete providing a consistent trail surface throughout the park. Benches will be installed along the trail at the north end of the park.

Construction is now underway. The first focus area is the Big Dry Creek Trail segment north of the playground, which is currently closed while crews complete trail improvements. This section is expected to reopen by the end of May. Trail users wishing to continue their walk or bike ride on the Big Dry Creek Trail may use the turf area to go around the closure. There is no specific trail detour as the segment under construction is short. Please use caution when construction crews are present.

Demolition will be occurring for several weeks and then the construction fencing will be expanded to take in the Big Dry Creek trail from the southern extent of the park to the playground, at which time an official trail detour will be posted. Again, please use caution when construction activity is taking place.

SSPRD has received the necessary approvals for the storm drainage from SEMSWA to move forward with the project. We anticipate going out to bid for the project the week of September 22 and the Board will award a contract in mid-November. Construction will start in December or January and be completed by May 2026. We're very excited to get this project underway and constructed for the neighborhood!

Following a public engagement event in the park in September 2024, South Suburban Staff and the design consultant have been working through obtaining final approvals for the park improvements. Much of Cherry Knolls Park is within the floodplain which has complicated the entitlement process and caused unanticipated delays in construction. South Suburban is confident that approvals can be obtained this Summer and late Fall construction start is anticipated.

The building will undergo a complete interior and exterior renovation which will include the addition of an extended roofline on the front of the building, providing shade and shelter for park and trail users at the restroom entrances. The design is meant to add articulation and interest to the existing building.
