What is happening at Sweetwater Park?

Sweetwater Park is being refreshed and renewed to better meet community needs. The project will enhance existing amenities, update aging infrastructure, and improve habitat health in upland areas while expanding opportunities for both active recreation and passive/natural experiences. Improvements will also aim to increase accessibility for individuals with varying abilities.

Why is this project being undertaken?

Sweetwater Park is a well‑loved but aging community park. The refresh and re-imagine will modernize key features, improve environmental conditions, enhance safety and accessibility, and ensure the park continues to serve the community for years to come.

    What park elements will remain?

While design concepts are still in development, most existing park amenities are expected to remain and may be improved, such as  the multi‑use field, playground, shade structure, regional trail, basketball court, and the creek corridor. Flood‑prevention areas will continue to be protected. A permanent restroom facility is being evaluated.

park elements are NOT being considered?

The project does not include pickleball, tennis, or racquetball courts, multi‑field sports complexes, sport field lighting systems, recreation buildings, community gardens, or water features. These amenities are available at other locations.

Do we already have funding for design or construction?

Currently, only planning funds have been approved. Both design and construction will be subject to approval through future South Suburban annual budget processes. Construction may occur in phases depending on available funding and potential grant opportunities.

Who will own and maintain Sweetwater Park after improvements?

South Suburban Park and Recreation District owns, manages, and maintains Sweetwater Park and will continue to do so after improvements are completed.

Will the annual Independence Day fireworks return to Sweetwater Park?

No, the event moved to Prairie Sky Park to better accommodate crowds and parking and is planned to remain there.

    Will parking be provided?

Parking needs and options are still being evaluated. Community input will inform whether parking should be enhanced or expanded and how to minimize impacts on nearby neighborhoods.

What is the timeline for improvements?

Planning and community engagement are underway now. Updated concept plans are expected to be shared for public review on March 18, 2026, following additional community input. A timeline for construction is not yet known and will depend on future budget approvals. The project may be built in phases.

How can I share my ideas?
