Sweetwater Park Planning and Design

We are excited to share that the Sweetwater Park Final Site Plan has been approved by the South Suburban Board of Directors.

The approved plan reflects extensive community engagement, technical analysis, and collaboration with project partners. Throughout the planning process, residents helped shape a vision centered on four key themes: Enhance Recreation, Update Play Features, Support Community, and View & Protect Nature.

The final plan includes:

• An updated playground and new swing grove
• Fitness and recreation amenities
• Improved trail connections and a new ½-mile loop trail
• Regional trail and bridge improvements
• Trailhead amenities and parking
• A youth wheels playground
• A small neighborhood-scale off-leash dog area
• Habitat preservation and nature-focused trail experiences
• Enhanced gathering spaces and community amenities

The design balances community priorities with environmental stewardship, long-term maintenance considerations, operational feasibility, and protection of the Willow Creek corridor.

Thank you to everyone who participated in surveys, public meetings, pop-up events, and project reviews. Your feedback played a critical role in shaping the final plan.

The approved site plan establishes a long-term vision for Sweetwater Park that will expand recreation opportunities, improve accessibility and connectivity, protect natural resources, and serve the community for generations to come.

The proposed final site plan for Sweetwater Park reflects the community's vision for the park and incorporates the four key themes identified through public engagement: Enhance Recreation, View and Protect Nature, Update Play Features and Support Community. The recommended amenities were evaluated and refined through six project vision inputs: site analysis, public events, community surveys, ecological analysis, nearby park amenity studies, and maintenance and operations reviews.

The result is a balanced plan that responds to community priorities and local needs while considering site conditions, long-term maintenance, habitat protection, constructibility, budget, and overall project feasibility. The proposed improvements aim to enhance recreation opportunities, strengthen connections to nature, and preserve the unique character of Sweetwater Park while supporting South Suburban's long-term goals and stewardship responsibilities.

The South Suburban Board of Directors will consider approval of the Sweetwater Park Final Site Plan following an opportunity for public comment. The Proposed Final Site Plan will be reviewed during the Board’s business meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the South Suburban Sports Complex (4810 E County Line Road, Littleton, CO, 80126).

South Suburban launched a planning and design project for Sweetwater Park in fall 2025 to guide future improvements while preserving the park’s unique character. Through public engagement, site analysis, ecological assessments, reviews of nearby park amenities, and maintenance and operations evaluations, the project team worked to develop a shared vision for the park. The final site plan reflects these six key inputs.

These efforts were balanced with considerations such as long-term maintenance, constructability, habitat protection, existing site conditions, community needs, budget, and South Suburban’s overall district priorities. Together, they helped shape a community-driven vision and the final design.

This report summarizes the public engagement process, key community feedback, and the final design recommendations for Sweetwater Park. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped shape the future of this valued community destination.

The goal of this survey is to understand your reactions to the overall feel of each concept and to identify which elements and locations you prefer. You are not selecting a single concept as the “winner.”

The final park design will blend elements from all three concepts, guided by feedback from the community, South Suburban, and the City of Lone Tree. Considerations such as budget, maintenance, constructability, habitat protection, and community needs will also help shape the final plan.
